Year: 1973
Model: X-90
Builder: Aermacchi / Harley-Davidson

History:
During the period that Harley-Davidson was owned by AMF, there was a line of lightweight motorcycles that were built by the Italian company, Aermacchi Industries, for Harley-Davidson, in which Harley-Davidson held a controlling interest at the time. These lightweights were offered in two different versions: The smaller of the two, referred to as a Shortster, had a 65cc engine installed, and the X-90, which came equipped with a 90cc engine. Other than that, these two models were pretty much identical.

This particular scooter was purchased in Texas, and was in pretty rough shape when we got it. It was stripped down to the bare frame, and the engine and transmission assembly was shipped off to Sonny's Motorcycle Repair in Lowell, Massachusetts, which specializes in Aermacchi/Harley restoration, for a complete overhaul. Sonny's replaced the transmission and clutch, and overhauled the engine, returning it to us in better-than-new condition. It runs beautifully, starts on the first kick every time, and is rock-solid reliable. The scooter is equipped with a four-speed transmission, and can ride a full-sized adult at traffic speeds. It is capable of keeping up with traffic, however, it is not recommended for freeway riding.

After completely stripping the scooter to the bare essentials, the frame, swing arm, seat pan, coil mount, triple trees, wheels, oil tank, and all major components were refinished in original factory colors and textures by Specialized Powder Coating located in Huntington Beach, California. The fuel tank and headlight nacelle were refinished in the factory paint colors, including the original decals on the fuel tank, and then clear-coated to preserve their detail by California Cycle Design in Costa Mesa, California. The front forks and rear shocks were also refurbished and refinished by Sonny's, who additionally supplied a new wire loom, headlight, taillight, brake, throttle, and clutch cables, handgrips, foot pegs, side reflectors, plus a ton of advice. The seat cover was replaced by a new, cosmetically correct factory replacement by Northwest Classic Covers, and has the correct Harley logo silkscreened on it. All the chrome-plated parts were re-plated by Sihilling Metal Finishing in Santa Ana, California. All the original hardware used in the reconstruction was re-clad in the original silver finish as used by the factory when the scooter was originally built. The front and rear fenders are made from stainless steel, and were straightened and repolished by Sihilling's. The speedometer was rebuilt, the face refinished in the original colors with original stylized script, and mileage was set back to zero. The cable and sleeve were replaced, the brake drums were refinished, and all the wheel bearings and seals are new. The tires and tubes are original tread design replacements, and are new as well.

There is no detail on this scooter that was overlooked. Everything works, it has a clear California title, and is currently registered for street use. It can be ridden on a daily basis, and is utterly reliable and trouble-free. It would also make a great pit bike for a race team, or an interesting addition to a collection. It is available for immediate delivery. Included with the scooter at time of sale are reprints of the factory parts and service manuals, some spare electrical parts, and miscellaneous parts and pieces that are indigenous to these now rare scooters.

We can assist with crating and shipping if necessary at additional cost. As with other little-known models built by Harley-Davidson over the years, many people don't realize that these models ever existed, and this is probably one of the best examples of this particular series ever offered.
